Extending the boundaries of heaven: Religious groups and their use of mass media in history
The panel will examine the way in which religious groups, both in Canada and elsewhere, have historically utilized books, print, electronic media, and digital media to advance their beliefs in the public square. The papers span a time period of 180 years, beginning with the publication of a literary women’s magazine for Protestants in the 1830s, moving then to the dissemination of English language bibles in Canada the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, followed by the mass production of religious textbooks by Canada’s largest Protestant denomination in the 1960s, and finally analysing the contemporary use of the Internet by thinkers representing non-Christian religions.
